RTO and RPO are important parts of your disaster recovery plan. They help you get ready for the worst-case scenario for your business. When all hell breaks loose, these calculations can help you figure out if things really are as bad as they seem.

What is RTO?

Recovery Time Objective (RTO) is a calculation of the amount of time your company’s system or website can afford to be out of action without causing significant damage to the business. It also includes the amount of time needed to get everything back up and running as usual.

For large businesses, being offline for just a few minutes can cause a huge loss in profit and productivity. Whereas other businesses can afford to be down for hours or more without significant disruption.

What is RPO?

Recovery Point Objective (RPO) is similar to RTO. Instead of time, it refers to the amount of critical data the business can afford to lose during an outage. Calculating both values and understanding how they relate to each other will give you a comprehensive action plan for unforeseen circumstances.

How to calculate RPO and RTO

RTO and RPO are most accurate when they are calculated with input from all departments and consider everything in the business that could be impacted by a system failure.

In the event of a crash or cyber-attack, consider the potential impact on employee productivity, lost billable hours or online sales, inaccessible or permanently lost data, data protection breaches, the impact on virtual environments, and more.

Use this information to calculate the costs and time required to resume normal business operations. Then create a value for the worst-case scenario: what is the longest amount of time and most amount of data that can be lost without sinking the business?

To improve your RPO and RTO, streamline your recovery business process, create multiple backups of data (including one offsite), monitor your website health, keep software and hardware up to date and ensure you have ample capacity to accommodate demand.
